First Film Scans {Charlotte Lifestyle Photographer}

Aug 16, 2013

I recently decided to let go a little…and by let go, I mean of control.
You see, us digital photographers, we have a tendency to look at the back of our camera as we make our images.  This is lovingly referred to as “chimping”.  Anyway, so I like to chimp.  It helps me to see if my exposure is where I want it to be, if the light is falling where I had envisioned it and if my composition is ideal for whatever I’ve got stirring around in my head.  I do not “spray and pray” or “point and shoot”.  In fact, I often come home with a headache after my sessions from squinting at the back of my camera or at the little LCD on top screen to see my settings and if the images I’m making are what I have envisioned.

So, you can imagine what happened when I bought a 35mm film camera.  I had my old 35mm, but I couldn’t revive it after so many years at rest.  So I received my shiny new (to me) toy and quickly remembered how to load the film and off on my merry way I went.  It was so freeing!  I couldn’t nitpick my images!  Whatever I shot was what I would get.  To my surprise when I received my first scans back today…I was happy.

Turns out letting go a little isn’t such a bad thing after all.

This first series was taken in the hospital after a dear friend gave birth to her darling twins (you will see MUCH more of them in a few days).

These images were all taken on the Nikon F100 loaded with Fuji 400h film .  I’m in love 🙂

    These are so beautiful!! I know the feeling of not being able to let go. I need to do this myself and have been toying around with the idea of film as well 🙂

    I have so often wished I had held on to my 35mm film. There is nothing like the look of film. These are just beautiful!
